| ACTIVE SPORTS: Eco-vacation opportunities abound on our island. Swimming and watersports (water-skiing, parasailing, jet-skiing, snorkeling, wind-surfing, and more) surround the island and there are hiking and biking trails through the rugged mountains in the center of the island. The best sailboarding is on the eastern coast where the tradewinds provide a constant breeze. Go to Tropical Wave/Chez Pat on Galion Beach for constant winds and the calmest water in the enclosed bay. |

The picture at the upper right was taken from the top of Pic Paradis. Action Nature (011 590 590 87 97 87) and and St Maarten National Heritage Foundation (011 599 542 4917) have more info on the trails. Tri-Sport in Simpson Bay (email | phone 545 4384 | fax 545 4385) and Frog Legs in Marigot (email | phone 87 05 11 | fax 87 25 54) rent and sell sports equipment. Many hotels and beaches have watersport rentals, notably Orient Beach, Simpson Bay, and Great Bay.

GOLF: Mullet Bay still has the golf course functioning even though the hotel has been closed since Hurricane Luis in 1995. Things have gotten better lately. There are more functioning carts and the course looks better because of several years without hurricanes and new equipment. The very active local golf association has been instrumental in maintaining the course. They also are the driving force behind the St Maarten Open, a tournament that raises thousands of dollars for local charities. SXM-Info has donated to their cause. That's our sign in the grass in the photo to the right. Golf de Grand Case has an uphill driving range and visions of carving a golf course out of the rugged terrain to the east of the airport in Grand Case. Currently, they are having trouble keeping their website in operation. |

HORSEBACK RIDING: Check out Lucky Stables in Cole Bay (544 5255) on the Dutch side or on the French side, look for Bayside Riding Club (87 36 64) near Orient Beach and the OK Corral (87 40 72) in Oyster Pond. TENNIS: Many hotels have tennis courts and there are public courts in Marigot at the Alberic Richards Stadium and in Philipsburg in the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex.
